My Creative Process…
Everything begins, with a pencil…
Actually, that’s not true, before the pencil there’s the inspiration which usually hits when I’m out in nature or sometimes reading a book or watching a movie, heck it may even hit while watching a documentary about how ice melts!
Either way the inspiration hits and my brain is swamped with images of motifs that curl and swirl and intertwine, but most importantly they tell a story or at the very least, celebrate something I love that I want to share with the world…
Looking through books is hands down one of my favourite things to do during the process. Going to the library or the local second-hand bookshop, certainly has its cosy element. As well as libraries and book shops I enjoy getting out to art galleries and museums whenever I can. There’s something wonderful about being able to see old things and learn how a craftsmen made pigments and brushes and applied it to making an object and that object has been made so intently and delicately.
When I can’t make it out I go online to see gallery archives for their collections. After a little research and I’ve pieced together a theme and create a mood board then it’s time for Pencil to meet paper…
I like to work on tracing paper, it doesn’t matter getting the sheet grubby with stains and marks as I’m going to be tracing over those lines with a fresh sheet. When the motif is complete I have the option to transfer onto watercolour paper, colour/ define/ scan/ clean combine into a pattern in Affinity Designer or scan/digitise in procreate/ colour & combine into a pattern in Affinity Designer…
