In keeping with the Dun Emer Press ethos, I decided to bind my own sketchbook and use it as a dedicated space to creatively explore and reflect during this project. That it may serve as a visual journal, documenting my ideas, rough sketches, clippings, everything related to this project during my residency, and after.
Motif and Patterns
I collected some beautiful motifs while researching decorative arts of the late 19th Century, and added them to my sketchbook.
This was essentially scrapbooking but I found it quite therapeutic and relaxed, which is a good head space to be in for conjuring up ideas for patterns.
I used what I learned with The Studio membership and drew up my own layouts, some were samples from the Studio to get the ball rolling but after finding my flow I started drawing up my own layouts.
